This is an area with fourteen structures, which are forest monasteries and built close to the city cemetery. The pansakūlika monks (i.e., those wearing cemetery or rag-robes) led a simple ascetic life here in the 8th and 9th century CE. Other forest monasteries (hermitages) include nearby Ritigala and Mihintalē, as well as Arankälē near Kurunegala. These are monastic ruins and monks’ residences.
