As the eldest of nine children of Marin Waterhouse Pepper, Frank is a fifth-generation Bolinas resident. His grandfather, Frank Waterhouse, created a subdivision (Grande Vista) out of his 131-acre Bolinas farm in the 1880's and sold 50 lots for $500.00. He also was a banker, a promoter and the co-inventor of arc lights used on the city streets. His mother had a tea room in Bolinas called La Casa de la Playa and authored a book called Bolinas: a Narrative of the Days of the Dons. His grandmother, Nellie Waterhouse, planted hundreds of Monterey Cypress trees to beautify Bolinas. Mr. Pepper tells about his family, early life in Bolinas, his life at sea at sixteen, his service with the Army aboard an Army Hospital ship during the war, and subsequent time in the Maritime Service. From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
