Description
The Winton Motor Carriage Company of Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1897 by Alexander Winton, a Scottish emigrant who built his first single-cylinder automobile in 1896. Winton Cars went into regular production by 1898. In 1899, the company sold 100 cars. By 1916, their annual sales reached 2,000 cars. After being involved in military production during World War I, the firm announced its dissolution in 1924, bowing to other industry leaders such as Henry Ford. Ironically, Winton had declined to hire Ford as a mechanic in 1899.
