Description
Photograph of the ruins of the Lakenhalle, or Cloth Hall, in Ypres, Belgium, ca.1915. The stone ruins are at center and only a few sections of the walls are still standing. Part of a rectangular tower is in the foreground at right. The roof of the tower is missing, and so is the top of the walls, which, when combined with the tall, thin windows, gives the ruins the appearance of a hand with fingers. Another section of the wall in the background has a large archway in it. The ground in the middle of the ruins is covered in stone rubble. The Medieval Lakenhalle was destroyed on November 22, 1914 by an incendiary device and was later rebuilt.
