Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Lilian Wong was born on March 31st, 1911 in Los Angeles, California. Her father was an herbalist who had immigrated to the U.S. from China to open his own office. Her mother’s family had moved to California in the 1870s from China. Her parents married in 1910. She attended L.A. High School and USC, from which she graduated in 1933 with a degree in Sociology. After graduation she married her husband and they moved to China so he could find work. They lived in China until 1982, when they returned to California. They were both involved with the Baptist World Alliance for decades.
