Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake, James Spinello was a Senior Transportation Engineer. In this oral interview James recounts his experience at Candlestick Park, where he was attending the World Series, and his drive home through the San Francisco Peninsula to reach his home in the East Bay area. James eventually volunteered to work at the San Leandro Maintenance station to relay information to the command center located at the Oak Street office. Also in this interview Jim offers his opinion and what he saw as the lack of public information regarding infrastructure damage, route closures, and emergency information.
