Description
Bust-length portrait. "To Mr. W. Treishler in very rich remembrance of San Francisco 10/2/1902 Josef Hofman" -- handwritten on image. 1990-2315. Josef Casimir Hofmann was born in 1876 in Poland. Was child prodigy pianist, touring Europe and the United States in 1887 and between 1910 and mid-1930's. Was pianist, composer and gifted in mathematics, science and mechanics (received patents for number of inventions). Worked for the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as head of piano dept. and director. Settled in Los Angeles where died in 1957.
