Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview Don Ross was an Assistant Bridge Engineer for Caltrans. When the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened, Don had just passed through the Cypress Structure on his way home. The day after the earthquake, he went to the San Mateo Bridge, his normal work assignment to survey the area where he had been working. Later he was assigned to work at the Cypress Structure and was there when Buck Helm was rescued. Ross was honored to have worked at the Cypress and to have been part of the rescue operations.
