Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Paul Kenney was a Right-of-Way Agent for Caltrans District 4 at San Francisco Office. When the earthquake happened, he was at home in Oakland, and after listening to radio reports, decided to drive in his car to Berkeley to see if he could offer his assistance. When he reached 880, he was directed by the State Police to go to Grand and Cypress Avenues. Kenney spent the next few days at the Cypress structure and this interview describes what he saw, his reaction when they rescued Buck Helm, and what he did.
