Description
Plates in: Mare Island photograph album, pg. [11]. 1991-1161. Shows ship at anchor in Strait; deck covered in awnings with line of sailors (period when training ship?); Vallejo in background. Pensacola, a screw steamer, launched by Pensacola Navy Yard in 1859. Saw service in Gulf of Mexico during Civil War; in 1866 sailed around Cape Horn to join Pacific Squadron ranging from Chile to Puget Sound to Hawaii; in 1883 sailed West to transit the Suez Canal returning to Atlantic Coast; 1890 returned to Pacific Coast, sometimes serving as naval training ship, receiving ship at Yerba Buena Training Station; struck from register in 1911.
