Description
This print is divided into two sections showing three women in the top panel and four children in the bottom panel, all in fashions for June, 1839. The woman at the left wears an elegant pink dress for an evening party. It has an off-the-shoulder v neckline of pleats with triple-tiered, ruffled sleeves trimmed in white lace. The fitted waistline of the bodice comes to a point which accentuates the narrow waist. The skirt is full and pleated. She holds a small pink bouquet of pink roses and a white handkerchief. Her hair is center parted and dressed in bunches of ringlets at the sides. Her headdress is a fringed scarf accented with berries or buds, and greenery. The woman in the center wears a gray dress with gathered puffed sleeves and a white lace v necked collar. The plain bodice is snug over a very full skirt. She wears yellow gloves and carries a white lace handkerchief. Her white poke bonnet is trimmed with small flowers, inside the brim and on the crown, and a veil. The woman on the right wears a white off-the-shoulder gown, the neckline trimmed with horizontal pleats and a flounce of ruffle. The elbow length sleeves are gathered, puffed, and trimmed with white lace. A gold rectangular brooch is fastened at the front of the neckline. The bodice is snug and ends in a point. The white skirt is patterned or accented with sprigs of small pink flowers with green leaves. Her hair has loops and braids over the ears in elegant curves. She wears pendant earrings and two fillets: one gold and one jeweled. In the bottom half of the illustration four children lean against a balustrade with a variety of toys around them. On the left a dark-haired girl with long braids wears a white dress over white lace trimmed pantalettes. Her hair has braids looped over her ears, and bows at the ends of the very long falling braids. The bodice of the dress is trimmed with several horizontal lace bands and the hem has lace trim arranged in a repeating vertical pattern. She wears netted mitts and her hand is resting on a rolling hoop as she looks toward her group of friends. Sitting on the balustrade is a girl who holds a ball and stick for the game knurr and spell. She wears a pink dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline trimmed with ruffles. She also wears netted mitts and a pink poke bonnet trimmed with a white feather and a pink ribbon ties. Standing next to her is a boy who points down at the rackets and shuttlecock of a game of Battledore & Shuttlecock. He wears a high-collared white shirt trimmed with a a lace ruffle down the center front. Around his high ruffled collar is a white cravat tied into a bow. Over his shirt is a tightly-fitted blue jacket with wide lapels and full sleeves gathered into wrist bands. The jacket is buttoned tightly and ends in a point. His tan stirrup pants are quite full at the hips and narrower at the hems. He wears yellow gloves and has a curved brim black hat trimmed with a white feather. The boy at the far right sits on the ground and is holding the stick used to roll the hoop at the far left. He wears a white ruffle-collared shirt with a tight-fitting dark purple jacket. The jacket buttons down the center front and has dropped shoulders, full sleeves, and snug wrist bands. His full trousers have a checker pattern in brown and black. His straw hat is trimmed with a feather.
