Provenance
Sale of the library of Abate Luigi Celotti, Sotheby's, 14 March 1825, lot 207. A sale catalogue slip affixed to front pastedown describes a "...map of the World on three leaves. " Since this volume also contains the Mediterranean chart made by Estienne Bremond (HM 31) which forms the third leaf and since neither is a "World map, " the sale catalogue entry either was carelessly made or the slip actually refers to a different portolan chart and was erroneously placed in this volume. This volume may instead have been lot 210 or lot 283 in the Celotti sale: both numbers are pencilled on the pastedown. Number 391 on back pastedown refers to Cochrane's sale of the library of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, to Sir Thomas Phillipps, 8 December 1830 as dated by A. N. L. Munby, The Formation of the Phillipps Library up to the Year 1840, Phillipps Studies (Cambridge 1951-60) 3:56. Front pastedown bears his number "Phillipps MS 6360. "
