Black and white lantern slide of the Evangelist, a single decker steamer owned by the Congo Balolo Mission. The East London Training Institute, the forerunner to Regions Beyond Missionary Union (renamed in 1900), purchased a mission yacht called the Evangelist in the 1870s to ferry students to seamen and their ships. Passengers on the Evangelist can be seen speaking with people on a vessel alongside, and a wooden flat bottomed boat is at the stern of the vessel, whose passengers speak with those on the Evangelist. A plank runs to the river bank for boarding and disembarking. This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
