Description
Photograph of the Municipal Plunge swimming pool brimming over with children, ca.1930. Children in their swimsuits play in the shallows of the pool, some with their arms in the air, others with their backs to the camera. In the foreground is a group of young boys. The swimming pool is a crowded sight, with children and some adults playing in the water, a few riding each others' shoulders. On the poolside, to the right, stands a wooden lifeguard tower, topped with an umbrella that shades a seated man from view. Behind this is a diving board. A crowd gathers on both sides of the pool, scattered loosely and watching the scene. Behind the right-hand crowd is a building marked "Municipal Plunge". Another diving board can be seen on the left side, directly across the right diving board. In the background are two roofed strictures, behind which sit a line of trees behind a wire fence.
Photoprint reads: "Outdoor activities in the sunshine makes for healthy bodies -- and minds of the youth of Los Angeles. To that end organized recreational activities have a large place in the out-of-school time for children. Above is one of the many outdoor swimming pools operated by the recreation department of the city".
