Two Mayan refugees; a man and a child, work with an axe and a machete to chop wood in the refugee camp of Chajul, Chiapas. In May 1984 refugees from the Chajul settlement fled and hid in the Lacandón jungle when Mexican newspapers headlined that the Minister of the Interior, Manuel Bartlett Díaz, decided to relocate the approximately 46,000 Guatemalans from Chiapas to Campechgle Dos refugiados mayas, un hombre y un niño, trabajan con un hacha y un machete cortando leña en el campamento de refugiados de Chajul, Chiapas. Cuando en mayo de 1984, los periódicos mexicanos reportaban que el secretario de gobernación, Manuel Bartlett Díaz, decidió reubicar a los aproximadamente 46,000 guatemaltecos de Chiapas a Campeche, los refugiados del asentamiento de Chajul huyeron y se escondieron en la Selva Lacandona.
