Photograph of Mission San Juan Capistrano, showing ruined altar of ancient stone church, California, 1901. In the extreme foreground at center, weeds cover the ground of the interior of the ruined church. During the earthquake, the bell tower fell upon the worshippers in this area. In the background at center, a large domed opening can be seen with small steps at its base. Around the opening, cracked columns and deteriorating walls are visible. A man is seen standing at left near a stone wall.
