Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
Rolland Joseph 'Speedy' Curtis was born in Louisiana in 1922. After serving three years in the Marines during World War II, he and his wife, Gloria, relocated from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1946. Curtis served four years with the Los Angeles Police Department, but resigned from the force in order to pursue both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from USC. He later became involved in city politics, as an associate of Sam Yorty, and later a field deputy to City Council members Billy Mills and Tom Bradley. He was briefly director of the Model Cities program in 1973. Rolland J. Curtis died in his home in 1979, the victim of a homicide. An affordable housing complex on Exposition Blvd. near Vermont Ave. was named in his honor in 1981, along with a nearby street and park.; Born in the Los Angeles County area of Cudahy and a College Football Hall of Famer, John Ferraro (May 14, 1924-April 17, 2001) served as councilman for Council District 4 from 1966 until his death, the longest tenure for city service. Sam Yorty (1909-1998) served as the mayor of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1973, in addition to having served as an assemblyman and congressman for California. William Parker (1902-1966) became police chief in 1950 and is recognized for his substantial contribution to the city's police department.
City Council Members John Ferraro (left) and Paul Lamport (second from the right) are pictured in City Hall Council chambers with two unidentified men holding a resolution presented to the Building Industry Association of California Inc. The unidentified men accept the award on behalf of the Association. This event took place on September 27, 1967. See images 00128554 through 00128558, and 00128570 through 00128576 for additional photos in this series.
