Born in 1908. Worked as prospector, lumberjack, investment banker managing the New York Anglo-California Bank. Went into newspaper industry as reporter, in 1937 became editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Was chairman of Crowell Collier Publishing Co. Died in 1976.
