Description
Scrapbook containing labels, notes, and ephemera regarding the history of canning in San Jose. Compiled by Thomas Benton Dawson. T. B. Dawson, his parents Dr. James M. and Eloise Jones Dawson started the first successful fruit canning operation behind their house in San Jose in 1872. The cannery was incorporated as the San Jose Fruit Packing Company in 1875. T.B. Dawson worked in the cannery industry for 55 years and served as general superintendent of California Packing Corporation from 1916 until 1926. 3-ring notebook contains T. B. Dawson's handwritten memoirs of the history of canning generally and in the Northern California. Also several SJFPC can labels (Dessert Apricots, California Fruits, Yellow Peaches, Comb Honey, Bartlett Pears, Green Gage Plums). Additional labels: Pacific Packing Co. Apricots (San Jose), Cutting Packing Co. Tomatoes (San Francisco).
