Description
Portrait of Sidney B. Cushing. Born on March 8, 1857 to Dr. John Cushing and Harriet Reed Barlow. Sidney was the founding president of the Mill Valley and Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railway and the person responsible for commissioning the building of the West Point Inn, along with several other railroad-related wooden buildings. After his father John passed away in 1879, Sidney and his mother converted his father's sanitarium into the the Blithedale Hotel which quickly became known as one of the most popular hotels in Northern California. It was open only during June, July and August, later extended from May through September. The Cushings lived in San Rafael during the winter. Sidney married Grace Eldridge and they had two children: John and Eleanor ("Dolly").
