Description
Note translation: "The table has a typical contemporary European form, but is decorated with Bamum relief carving. Pigs in the background." (C. M. Geary, E-30-0,7 and E-30-0,8). - Similar image: E-30.29.026. - Peter Valentin also draws attention to the carvings on the legs and the vertical surfaces under the horizontal plates. Immediately under the upper plate we can read 'Bamum' with, left and right, a European floral decoration. But it seems likely that the carvings on the legs are Bamum designs - the earth-spider symbol for example. (PV 02.2002). - None of us have tried to analyse the decorations on the horizontal plates - is this really inlaid work? (PJ 02.2002).
