Description
"A Boku Village". Group of village men, including Popona. One of 27 prints mounted on 14 loose album pages by H.P. Schlencker. Schlencker served the L.M.S. in Papua New Guinea from 1895 to 1926, initially at Isuleilei until 1900 when he began work inland. He married Mary in 1905 and continued his work in the Boku and Kalaigolo areas until 1910. Schlencker employed the "settlement" principle of taking children, and sometime adults, away from their villages and families to live with the Christian community at the missionary's house as a method of converting the population, and ensuring they continued to lead a Christian life following their conversion.
