Description
Brick, 3-story tenement building with basement, featuring Boys Brotherhood Republic signs in the windows, and "City Hall / Where Boys Rule" sign over the front entrance. The second story windows bear signs that read, "Boys 14 to 18 Years of Age Eligible for Membership," "Where Boys Rule," and "Boxing Billiards Ping Pong Debates Court Trials." The signs in the first floor windows read, "B.B.R. is the most interesting boys club / managed by boys / all officers elected ..." and "Boys City Hall B.B.R. 2 Entire Floors Library Music Games Owned and Used by Members Only Boys Brotherhood Republic Where Boys Rule / Age Limit 14 to 18 / Members Only [?] / Boxing Wrestling." Next door to the building is a Fountain Pen repair shop, and a Party Favor retailer. Believed to be one of the early headquarters of the New York B.B.R. on East Houston Street near Avenue B, before they moved to 290 East 3rd Street. Harry Slonaker mentions this location in his notes to author William Welling, "We outgrew these premises and rented a little storefront place on Houston St. near Avenue B."
