Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta, Leader of the Nationalist Republican Alliance party (ARENA), smokes a cigarette during a conference at his campaign headquarters in San Salvador on election day. He is wearing a bulletproof vest and he is holding a cigarette and a lighter. He declared victory at 11:00pm. D'Aubuisson wears a bulletproof vest after he was grazed by a bullet. In 1993, a report published by the United Nations Commission on the Truth for El Salvador established that it was Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta who gave the order to assassinate Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero in 1980.
