Description
Pictured in 1932 is the main office building and hangar - also known as Hangar Number Three - for the Sutterville Aerodrome, located on Freeport Boulevard. Opened in 1930, the field replaced a previous venture at Del Paso Park which was scuttled largely due to its lengthy distance from Sacramento's city center. Accordingly, the City of Sacramento puchased roughly 235-acres of farmland and open space from A.H. Suggett for 80,000 dollars, effectively creating a municipal airport, just two miles south of the Capitol building. A runway - one of three - stands just behind the structure which was officially dedicated in September 1931 with a dance on the hangar floor.
