Description
A banana plant grows in Sacramento in this circa 1900 postcard. What had been a mere curiosity to Americans for decades had, by the late nineteenth-century, become a staple as, in 1889, an estimated 1.2 billion bananas had been eaten by American consumers. By 1900, bananas were ripening at mid-winter at the Alkali Flat home of S.H. Gerrish.
