Description
Interview by SDASM Docent Ron Carrico of Joe Engle, Major-General, USAF Retired. General Engle discusses his life flying fighter aircraft, test flying with emphasis on the X15 rocket plane and how the lessons learned from the X15 helped develop the re-entry and landing procedures of the Space Shuttle. Joe Engle flew the Shuttle Enterprise from drop from a Boeing 747 to landing. Thereafter he flew Space Shuttle STS 2 and hand flew the re-entry and landing from space. He also spent 9 days as commander of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS5i. General Engle also answers questions prepared by a 6th grade class regarding space flight, preparation, weightlessness and what happens to water in a zero G environment.
