In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 314 top, center and bottom, and page 315 top, center and bottom.
These photographs are contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Six views of an aquatic celebration. Dobbin captions these photos as depicting an event in North Beach celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal locks. A photo of this same event in Frank Morton Todd's "The Story of the Exposition" identifies it as a Columbus celebration which took place at the Exposition site on October 11, 1914.
Page 314 top is labeled "Boat Race between crews from U.S. War Vessels. North Beach." Alcatraz is in the background. About 14 men are in a rowboat (center), other row boats with crews and people in pleasure and fishing boats are in the water. Page 314 center is labeled "North Beach Celebration of the opening of the locks of the Panama Canel [sic]," and shows a crowd of spectators watching a number of row boats and fishing boats in the bay. Page 314 bottom, not captioned, shows three Italian fishing boats meant to represent Columbus' ships, as they are named the "Nina," "Pinta," and "Santa Maria." Other boats surround them, spectators are in the foreground.
Page 315 top, labeled "North Beach Celebration Opening Panama Canal," shows the navy rowing crews at the end of their race, and a tall diving tower. Page 315 center, labeled "Celebration opening of the Panama Canel [sic]," shows the Italian fishing boats representing Columbus' ships, Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, tied up in front of a crowd of spectators. Some people in kayaks can be seen behind them. Alcatraz is in the background. Page 315 bottom, labeled "North Beach Aquatic Sports Celebration opening Panama Canal" underneath and "High Diving" to the right, shows a high diving tower with several boys climbing the tower and quite a few more standing on the bottom waiting to go up. Many boats are in the water behind, as is Alcatraz.
Negative, no. 5,384 (page 314 top); 24,481 (page 315 top); 24,482 (page 315 center), 5,385 (page 315 bottom).
