Donaghy came to Maryknoll in 1925 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1929. His first mission was to Kaying in 1929. His first yers were spent in Chongpu mission where he became proficient in the Kakka dialect. He also taught in the minor seminary. He was assigned to Tsungow and remained there for seven years.
