Photograph caption dated May 14, 1929 reads, "People are just beginning to learn about speech," says Mr. Grace. Jean Chaney shows a machine developed by telephone engineers here to measure strength and proper use of voice. When one speaks properly into the mouthpiece, the dial, pointed out by arrow, so indicates. When the voice is "off," the dial registers exactly how much."
