Description
Businesses along South First Street, including Yates & Yates, Burton House, Books & Stationery; Charles Barr, Wine & Liquor Merchant; Photo caption: "S. First St., San Jose. Present location of Security Bank. Roberts & Gross." Featured in the "City with a Past" exhibit with this caption: South First Street between Santa Clara and San Fernando, c. 1866. Used on page 20 of Connie Young Yu's "Chinatown, San Jose, U.S.A." with caption: An 1866 view of south First Street, San Jose, between Santa Clara and San Fernando streets. Note the look of the frontier town, with "cheap publications" and "lager beer" prominently advertised. The San Jose City Directory for 1870 lists 26 saloons. From page 370 of the Blanchard album.
