Description
The USO Hospitality House sits at the southern end of Plaza Park, now Plaza de Cesar Chavez. The California State Flag flies from the flagpole on the left. On the right a bell hangs from a wood beam supported by two stone pillars. The bell was installed in Plaza Park in 1891 as a memorial to San Jose firefighters who lost there lives in the line of duty. The bell was removed from the park in 1994 and now sits in front of Fire Station No. 1 on Market Street. In the middle center is the top of San Jose City Hall. The USO hospitality hut was built in 13 1/2 hours on August 16, 1941 by 160 volunteer construction workers. The "temporary " structure was vacated in 1974 and demolished in August, 1976. Today, part of this site is now occupied by the statue of Quetzalcoatl.
