Description
Pt 1: Charles Amirkhanian hosts a preview of works by composers participating in the 8th Other Minds Festival on KPFA-FM, February 17, 2002 from 6:30-9:00pm. In the first half, we hear a gamelan piece and several works for guitar by composer Lou Harrison. A guitar quartet by Brazilian-Armernian composer Ricardo Tacuchian is played followed by another Harrison piece for tack piano. Harrison then joins Amirkhanian and Sarah Cahill by phone for discussion. Also played are excerpts of Harrison demonstrating the tuning for a just intoned tack piano to perform his piece "Incidental Music for Corneille's Cinna" as well as him playing the first movement of Cinna. Before parting from the telephone, Harrison reminisces about the early days of KPFA. Richard Friedman, composer and former program host on KPFA, joins Amirkhanian in the studio and the two talk about the many improvements to the station and recordings in the new KPFA building, as well as the Ondes Martenot and its place in the upcoming Other Minds festival. Pt 2: Second half of the preview show focusing on the upcoming 8th Other Minds Festival. Hosted by Charles Amirkhanian on KPFA-FM, February 17, 2002 from 6:30-9:00pm. Amirkhanian and Richard Friedman continue to plug the festival and its participants. They discuss the work of Ellen Fullman and her long string instrument which will be featured in the festival's third and final concert on March 9th 2002. After playing a selection by the Deep Listening Band with Pauline Oliveros (also a featured composer of OM 8) and Ellen Fullman, Amirkhanian and Friedman are joined by former KCRW radio host Harry Bernstein. The three discuss the current state of radio, and its lack of adventurous programming for fear of compromising commercial profit. Bernstein talks a little about the work of Randy Weston before playing a selection from his album Khepera. Weston was also another composer in the upcoming OM 8 lineup. After playing an unusually commercial commercial for Other Minds 8, the program closes with a track from 1955 by the Randy Weston Trio. Several programming announcements and the beginning of the show Earth Sounds are also heard.
