Description
This photograph of a Safeway grocery store at 2600 Franklin Boulevard was taken on May 5, 1939. By this time, Safeway had placed well over twenty of its stores through Sacramento County. While the country was still recovering from the drags of the Great Depression, by the mid-1930s Safeway sales were growing at an annual rate of 15 percent. During a period of such economic tumult, the company's morale was bolstered by various social events, including a "Hard Times Dance" for 250 store employees, held in 1933 at North Sacramento's Masonic Temple.
