"Weizen oder Bulesi wird in einem Holztrog gestampft. Mädchen mit Ohrschmuck. Kinder von Geschw. Bachmann. Maiskolben" (Wheat or bulesi is being pounded in a wooden trough. Girl with ear jewellery. Bre[thren] Bachmanns' children. [An] ear of corn"). Portrait of an African girl with stretched out ear-lobes and two of Bachmann's children sitting behind a wooden trough. The two girls are holding pestles. Toy building blocks, an ear of corn and a basket are lying in front of the trough on the ground. Three pillars of a porch in the background. A black line has been drawn from top to bottom on the left. -- The picture was probably taken during 1908-1916 when both Emil and Traugott Bachmann served the mission in Nyasa. -- It remains unclear whose children the children in the picture are, either those of Traugott Bachmann or those of Emil Bachmann. -- Johann Traugott Bachmann (1865-1948) was a missionary of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine. He served in the year 1892 in Makapalile and from November 1892 to 1899 in Rungwe. In June 1899 he founded the station in Mbozi where he served until 1911 and from 1913 until his internment in 1915. He was married to Elisabeth, née Künzel (1872-1949). -- Emil Karl Bachmann (1875-1940) and his wife Elisabeth Marie Bachmann (1885-?) were missionaries of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine from 1908-1916. During that time they stayed in Isoko (1908-1910), Rutenganio (1910), Mwaja (1910-1912) and Rungwe (1912-1916). For the following three years they were British prisoners of war. After they were released, they became missionaries of the Berlin Mission.
