Description
Photograph of the J. G. de Turk's Livery, Feed and Sale Stable on the northwest corner of First Street and Broadway, Los Angeles, ca.1884-1891. This location was where the Board of Trade and the California Club met, and where the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce began meetings in 1888. Taken looking northwest from the Nadeau Hotel. There are a few horse-drawn vehicles on the street which rounds a corner as it proceeds up the hill on top of which are situated 3 large houses. A few other commercial buildings are visible. Legible signs include: "Harness and sadlery", "J. G. de Turk's Livery Feed Sale Stable". Additional information: originally, the photograph was captioned as, "Tallyho Stables on the northwest corner of First Street and Broadway, Los Angeles, ca.1886-1893"
however, articles of incorporation for Tally-Ho Stables & Carriage Company were filed no earlier than July 17, 1891 and Mr. de Turk was not mentioned as one of the four directors. At some point, a second building, also housing stables, was added to the right (north) of the corner property. The de Turk corner building was replaced by the Tajo Building (ca.1897-1938), which was built by Mrs. Simona Bradbury, widow of Lewis Leonard Bradbury (of the Bradbury Building). In about 1907, the inside of the remaining Talley-Ho building was converted, at least partially, to a motor garage. See also CHS-271 and CHS-272 (zoom to lower right).
