Description
Basketball rose to prominence at Santa Clara after the football program was ended in 1952. Beginning in that year the basketball team competed in the NCAA playoffs for three years in a row. On the left in this photo is Dick Garibaldi, who was later the Broncos coach, and Ken Sears, who went on to play for the Knicks and Warriors in the NBA, and who was the first basketball player to have his picture on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine (in 1954, while still at Santa Clara) .
