Description
This February 3, 1933, photograph captures the enormity of locomotive and car parts at the Southern Pacific Railroad Shops. At the time of the photograph, Southern Pacific had invested 125,000 dollars into the modernization of forty-one of its passenger cars, complete with air-conditioning, rubber-tiled floors, new chairs, porcelain plumbing with both hot and cold water. What this meant for workers, like those pictured, was the conversion of part-time hours to full-time.
