Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Description
Sandy H. Hom on her return trip to Toisan (Taishan Shi), her native village in the Guangdong Province in China. Sandy is shown here in her old bedroom; that is her old bed in the background. She fled the village in 1952 when the communists took control of the village. Taishan Shi is located in the Pearl River Delta, 140 kilometers west of Hong Kong, with a population of approximately 1 million. It is one of four county-level cities in an area known as Sze Yup.
