Description
Photograph of faculty and staff of Holland Union Gakuen, that is, Clarksburg Japanese Language School in Sacramento, California. It was taken to commemorate its 10th anniversary on October 28, 1935. The Japanese caption reads: ホーランドユニオン学園創立10周年記念. American and Japanese flags flying from a house is seen. On the lower half of the photograph, six people are holding certificates and awards, who are sitting in the front and center of a large group of people. On the back side: J. Kai Photo Studio 3593 East 1st Street, Los Angles, Calif. Naoki ("Jack") and Tsuyoko (nee Tanoue) Koyasako were farmers who grew asparagus and onions in Clarksburg, California. They had eight children: Suenari ("Sue"), Kazuo ("Jackson), Kiyoko ("Kik"), Yoshio ("Yank"), Sueo ("Goi"), Jimmy, Tsuyako ("Chuck"), and Mitsuo ("Mits). Suenari married Alma Makashima. The Koyasako family was incarcerated at Tule Lake and took photographs with a contraband camera. Suenari was a musician in the "Paradise Melodiers" band that played in the Tule Lake administration building.
