The Van Nuys Airport was formerly known as the Van Nuys Metropolitan airport.
Photograph article dated August 30, 1946 partially reads, "Thirteen final starters, including three Valleyites and three women, were preparing today to make the takeoff Aug. 30 from Van Nuys Metropolitan airport in the $10,000 Bendix Trophy race to Cleveland." Seen here is one of the racers, Johnny Shields, flying a P-38. Popular movie stunt pilot and racer, Paul Mantz was among the contestants to participate.; See images #00109850 through #00109851 for all photos in this series.
