Title supplied by cataloger. According to Christian Gospel accounts and tradition, Joseph was the husband of Mary and the legal father of Jesus of Nazareth. Christian faith tradition also holds that Joseph did not physically beget Jesus, but that Mary's conception was believed to have been an act of the Holy Spirit, since Mary was a virgin at the time of the birth. Little else is known of Joseph except that he was apparently a skilled craftsman or carpenter. In contrast, Mary is one of the most highly venerated saints in the Catholic Church. In the New Testament, the author of the Gospel of Luke records that Saint Matthias was the Apostle chosen by the remaining eleven apostles to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and his suicide. It is believed that St. Matthias was born in the 1st century AD in Judea (modern-day Israel) and died circa 80 AD in Jerusalem or in Colchis (modern-day Georgia). It is also believed that Matthias was one of the seventy disciples of Jesus, and had been with Him from His baptism by John to the Ascension. All further information concerning the life and death of Saint Matthias is vague and contradictory. View of the altar located inside St. Matthias Catholic Church, showing a large statue of Jesus Christ on a crucifix with a gold medallion behind it, and statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph kneeling on either side of Him; another smaller statue (also of Jesus) can be seen directly below. St. Matthias Catholic Church was founded in 1913 and is located at 3095 E. Florence Avenue in the city of Huntington Park. The church also has an adjacent school, which caters to grades pre-Kinder through 8th grade. The church office is located around the corner at 7215 Mission Place. Photograph dated: June 2005.
