Article by Charles Handy on the independent effect privatization has had on worker loyalty, and how shared work communities may be the answer to worker disconnect from the organization. Handy begins the article discussing how modern organizations and businesses have encouraged workers to become mercenaries, and how those inside institutions have been forced to think of themselves as independent. Such developments have led workers to be committed to nothing beyond themselves and their futures, and Handy argues that the concept and practice of shared work may be the only remedy to the increasing self-interest of modern society. Shared work, accordingly, would stimulate feelings of pride, passion, and togetherness among independent workers in an organization, which will be needed more than the incentive of money to keep workers loyal to the organization and responsible for each other.
