Description: Lulu Younkin, the San Diego Public Library's first librarian, arrived in September of 1887. A former teacher and graduate of the University of Iowa, she organized the book collection by the Dewey Decimal system and compiled the first printed catalog. This photograph was taken in 1897, a year before her death at age 32. Title supplied by cataloger.
