Side view of St. Dominic Catholic Church and school, located on the northeast corner of Maywood and Merton avenues in Eagle Rock. St. Dominic School was founded in 1925, four years after the parish was established. It was dedicated on February 24, 1925, and officially opened on September 8, 1925 with four teachers and approximately 100 students. In 1941, when the new church building was completed, the old church was converted into extra classrooms. In 1953, four brick classrooms were added as the schools enrollment growth continued. In September 1964, the school opened with an enrollment of 720 students. St. Dominic School is a private school that serves grades K-8. Eagle Rock is a neighborhood in northeastern Los Angeles that derives its name from a massive boulder at the district's northern edge, which contains an indentation that casts a vaguely bird-shaped shadow on the rock at certain times of day. In 1906 Eagle Rock became an independent city and was incorporated in 1911 with a population of approximately 600; in 1920, population had grown to 2,250. Just one year later, in 1921, this figure had leaped to 3,800, and by 2005, the U.S. census estimated the population at approximately 27,875.
