Description
The woman on the left wears a soft-blue evening dress with long, leg-of-mutton sleeves trimmed with white lace at the cuffs. A deep vee runs from the shoulders, over the bust, coming to a point at the waist. This vee is edged with several layers of ornate white pointed lace. The space of the vee is thin, white, fabric that exposes the contours of the woman's body, and has a bateau neck. She wears white gloves and blue shoes and stockings to match her dress. Her hat is a very pale blue with a round brim. The crown is trimmed with white bows and sprays of white roses, while the underside of the brim is decorated with more white bows, points of white lace, and long, ice-blue ribbon ties which are worn untied. The woman is seated in a pink chair upholstered in yellow with high, curving arms. She rests her feet on a small, rectangular footstool carved of the same wood and upholstered in red. In her left hand she holds what may be a gold mirror or fan, trimmed with white plumes. Her standing companion wears a black, off-the-shoulder evening dress with full skirts and short, puffed sleeves. The neckline is edged with two flounces of delicate white lace, and the woman wears black shoes and white, elbow-length gloves with scalloped edges. She has a double strand necklace made of diamond-shaped jet beads and an elaborate coiffure trimmed with a circlet of small white flowers, several large, white plumes, sprays of white wheat, and two long, lace-trimmed panels which hang down behind her like a veil. The woman holds a pink rose and a spray of off-white, lilies in her right hand.
