Description
On reverse: 8 Hard Candy Wrapping Machines, Beechnut Life Savers, San Jose, California From accompanying captions: "Reddington Automatic Packaging Machines for wrapping hard candy. The hoppers at the front of the machines are set up for wrapping Five Flavor rolls. The steps are used by the hopper-fillers, who carried the candy from the cooling conveyors to the wrapping machines. They used a kind of weight-lifters' "clean and jerk" to do it--raise the bin to their shoulder, then to the edge of the hopper. Then they could step up the steps and dump the candy into the hoppers. One newly-hired hopper filler worked out just fine, until they started wrapping Five Flavor, which had a specific pattern of color and flavor. That was when they discovered he was color-blind. I believe they transferred him to the Mint department, where everything was white, and the hopper fillers and operators had to taste each new batch dumped in the hopper, to be sure it matched the labels they were running. (On one occasion my father, who liked wintergreen, took a candy from the machine where they were supposedly running wintergreen, and discovered they were wrapping clove flavor in wintergreen wrappers. They had to back-track through the filled and over-wrapped one-pound boxes of candy rolls to find where the problem started, then open all the boxes, slip the packages, and dump the candy. It went into invert syrup, but they lost a lot of production time. Julie Pifer)"
