Description
"Mission Carpentry." Exterior view of workplace with Africans, dressed in European style clothes, in foreground. The mission trained both Yao and Manganja men in carpentry. The carpentry department was run by John McIlwain, an artisan missionary who first arrived in Africa in 1880 in the service of the Livingstonia Central Africa Company. In 1884 he joined the mission and became head of carpentry, a post he held until his death in 1927.
