Description
A woman wears a dress in the Circassienne style (named for a region in Caucasia). The dress is pale lavender with white ruffles at the collar, two bands of pink ribbon at either shoulder, and vertical pink ribbons along the bodice. The sleeves end just below the elbow with a white ruffle and then have a pouf of white netting to just above the wrist. The skirt is full and seems to be supported by panniers. It is trimmed with white ruffles, pink ribbon, and swags of white with bunches of purple flowers. Her shoes are pink, and she holds a closed fan in her right hand. Her elaborately arranged hair or wig is very high and decorated with ropes of pearls and a spray of heron and egret feathers. She looks back at the viewer over her shoulder, and seems to be standing on grass. Written in pencil in the lower left-hand corner is "23," as well as some partially erased markings.
