"Mother Leonard - Born 1809 and hopes to live to see the Centenary of the Missionary Society. She is the oldest member of the Wesleyan church at Wesley Mount., Manchester, Jamaica, and is an ex-slave. her emmory is still good and clear and she has many a story to tell of the old evil days which are gone forever." William Baillie served as a missionary in Jamaica for over sixty years, He arrived in Jamaica aged 23 in 1887 and served until his death in 1948. There are a number of photographs by Reverend Baillie in the collection, and many appeared in the pages of the "Foreign Field. The earliest Wesleyan mission began in the West Indies when, in 1786, Thomas Coke, destined for Nova Scotia, was driven off course by a storm and landed at Antigua in the British West Indies. There he developed a successful mission of both slaves and landowners. Within a few years almost every colony in the West Indies had been reached.
